St Mary’s – Car Colston

The Parish of Car Colston and Screveton

St Mary’s is a Grade I listed building dating from 1190 and is prominently sited in the middle of the village and on a crossroad of footpaths.

The church is blessed with an attractive 14th century chancel which includes an ornate sedilia. Unusually the chancel rises higher than the nave. Car Colston is situated in the midst of farming land and surrounds one of the largest registered commons in England on which cattle graze during the summer.

Church Bells

Car Colston has a ring of six bells on wooden headstocks. They were re-hung in 2023, including adding a new bell to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.  The treble was cast in 1633, the 3rd in 1872, the tenor, which weighs about 8 cwt, is an early piece of work by Richard Mellows of about 1480.

Our ringing practice sessions are on a Thursday morning. Please contact us if you would like to join us.
